![]() ![]() At the very least there are five authorial voices: the historical Zhuangzi his disciples a "Primitivistic" Daoist author with ideas akin to those of the Dao de jing, who responded to the challenge of the followers' individualist thinker Yang Zhu and the "Syncretic" Daoist authors who likely compiled the original recension of the text. While what we know of the philosophy of Zhuangzi comes primarily from this work, it is important to realize that the Zhuangzi text is not the work of a single author. ![]() ![]() Zhuangzi is both the name of the second foundational text of the Daoist philosophical and religious tradition and the name of the putative author of this text after whom the book was titled, who, according to early historical sources, flourished between about 369 and 286 bce. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Some societies developed faster than others because of maps, not chaps. Without such an alternative account, there is always the risk that some kind of racial superiority-whether the soft variety (our ideas are better than yours) or the hard variety (our stock is better than yours)-will sneak in through the back door.ĭiamond’s answer, in a word, is geography. But that is not the same as understanding why those explanations are wrong, and/or which explanations should replace them. That way lies colonialism, paternalism, racism, eugenics, and all their works. But this just pushes the question back one step: Why did the Spanish, rather than the Incans, end up with guns, germs and steel? Are Spanish people genetically superior? Is Spanish thought more amenable to innovation and technological advancement? Are Spaniards more intelligent by nature? More creative? Luckier? Or what?Įveryone reading this will sense that any explanations based on genes, biology, superiority, intelligence or other innate qualities are morally unacceptable. Francisco Pizarro defeated Atahualpa because he had guns, germs and steel, and the Incans didn’t. A commonly cited answer is found in the title of Jared Diamond’s development classic, Guns, Germs and Steel: A Short History of Everybody for the Last 13,000 Years. ![]() ![]() Teach your daughters to tell people to 'Fuck off!' when needed. Teaching girls to take abuse and be submissive because 'you always have to be nice' and 'good girls are nice' is SO toxic. ![]() Stop just taking the abuse and being submissive. If Olive was my daughter I'd tell her to stay the hell away from Nat and, if need be, stand up to her. That's not justified by the fact that Nat's parents are getting a divorce. I mean, the interview in the back of the book makes it seem like the author views Nat and Olive as 'just not getting along' and 'rub each other the wrong way' or some shit but in reality Olive is nothing but kind and welcoming to Nat and Nat is a total asshole to her. The book ends with the girls making peace, but not being exactly 'friends' but I was aggrieved. Natasha is toxic and Olive does NOT have to be friends with her. My main problem is that the book is like, "Oh, they should be FRIENDS! Olive should be UNDERSTANDING! It must be HARD for Nat being the new girl in school!" Etc. She bullies her (even going so far as to egg her house at one point) and basically makes Olive miserable. However, Natasha is an asshole, she treats Olive like crap. ![]() Olive is nothing but nice to this girl, takes her around, introduces her to everyone, and goes out of her way to make her feel welcome and included. ![]() I have been reading Miller's work and enjoying it, but she kind of lost me on this one.Ī new girl (Natasha) comes to Olive's school. The Book of Koli, the first entry in the Rampant Trilogy, which will continue with The Trials of Koli (29 September 2020) and The Fall of Koli (early 2021), brings us a world busted back to a near-medieval society where the world that existed before lives on only as myth and legend, if it is known about at all. Carey ( The Girl With All the Gifts, Someone Like Me) demonstrates rather alarmingly in his post-apocalyptic novel, The Book of Koli that those kinds of assumptions are bound to die a quick death as the fragile tendrils of civilisation tear and snap under the destructive weight of the end of the world.
